The Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation (DTHF) is a registered non-profit organisation focused on the pursuit of excellence in research, treatment, training and prevention of HIV and related infections in Southern Africa.
The foundation has a strong commitment to service delivery and community development but maintains an imperative to underscore this with evaluation and relevant research with the ultimate aim to impact
on policy. The DTHF is involved in a number of initiatives which include the provision of antiretroviral therapy, studies into adherence strategies,
clinical research, resource development for health care professionals,
preparation of communities for HIV vaccine trials, adolescent sexual health and HIV prevention.
The DTHF provides antiretroviral therapy to public sector patients in both Nyanga and Masiphumelele as well as at the Clinical Trials Unit based at the Desmond Tutu Centre in the Institute of Infectious Diseases and Molecular Medicine at the Medical Faculty of the University of Cape Town.
In partnership with the Western Cape Provincial AIDS directorate,
the foundation started the first fully government integrated pilot
project in Nyanga, Cape Town, where, since September 2002, over
2000 patients have been commenced on antiretroviral treatment at
