The Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) has been conducting Phase II and III HIV-related drug and vaccine trials since 1996. Until the summer of 2003, the unit was based in Somerset Hospital in Cape Town but then moved to its current site at the University of Cape Town.

As an 'action-research' organisation, DTHF, alongside the Desmond Tutu HIV Centre, is committed to combining excellent research and medical care with effective community development programmes.

Current research projects and collaborations include:

  • Pharmaceutical trials conducted by Desmond Tutu HIV Centre's Clinical Trials Unit, located on site at University of Cape Town's Faculty of Health Sciences
  • HIV Vaccine trials and preparedness studies operated from the newly launched Emavundleni Centre in Old Crossroads
  • Antiretroviral treatment and adherence strategies
  • Psychosocial studies in adolescent sexual health and sexual risk patterns
  • Patterns of risk behavior and pharmaceutical prevention methods for men who have sex with men
  • TB/HIV interaction research based out of Hannan Crusaid Treatment Centre in Gugulethu

Each research endeavor is led by a highly-skilled principal investigator and is supported by site investigators and staff. With over 141 research papers and 13 book chapters published to date since our inception, Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation prides itself as a leading contributor to national and international advancements in HIV research.
