"Staff at the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation's mobile HIV testing clinic, the Tutu Tester, who were held up at gunpoint in Nyanga this week, say they will not let the incident hamper their work.
Two suspects approached a security guard at the Etafeni Day Care Centre in Nyanga on Wednesday and demanded to enter at an exit gate.
The security guard tried to block the one suspect, but he threatened the guard with a gun, while his accomplice entered the mobile unit and robbed people of their valuables.
The unit has been testing for chronic diseases in medically under-serviced areas of the Western Cape. Launched at the end of May 2008, the Tutu Tester combines quick fingertip HIV testing with screening for other common chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension.
Project Manager Nienke van Schaik said the incident would not hamper their efforts to provide a much needed service in the province.
'The incident is unfortunately one of the challenges we face in doing our work, in the same way that many other businesses are affected by crime,' she added.
Nyanga police spokeswoman, Captain Ntomboxolo Sitshitshi, said police were still searching for the two suspects."
