In December 2005, the University of Cape Town's medical class of 1975 celebrated their thirtieth anniversary reunion. Approximately fifty alumni arrived from around the globe to the UCT medical campus to participate in a very special gathering that celebrated the remarkable spirit of the class of '75. One of the defining aspects of the reunion was the shared recognition of the hardships of the past and acknowledgement of the profound challenges that South Africa is still facing today, particularly HIV/AIDS and its devastating impact on young South Africans. This dialogue sparked the idea of uniting as a class in a meaningful effort to bring some benefit to the young men and women living with HIV/AIDS, specifically in the township of Masiphumelele and to raise funds to build the Kethuphila ‘Choose Life' Youth Centre.
The group has been ably chaired by Professor Michael Hayden, a world renowned geneticist responsible for ground breaking work in Huntingtons Chorea and a member of the Class of 75. Micahel now is Director for the Centre of Molecular Therapeutics at UBC in Vancouver and was named Canada's "Health Researcher of the Year" in 2008. He has been instrumental in also reaching influential and generous people in Vancouver who have marvelously contributed to this project as well.
With Michael Hayden and these fundraising representatives working earnestly in various corners of the globe, this group has contributed vastly to the construction costs of the building, and has helped us reach our ground-breaking goal of R4.5 million.
Thanks to their faithful efforts, DTHF plans to break ground on this holistic Youth Centre in 2009.

Since the beginning of 2007, our friends at Investec Asset Management have been loyal supporters of our HIV initiatives. Along with other community development programmes around the country, they have invested in various projects with the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation. Their two large donations have enabled us to invest significantly in institutional capacity-building, such as training and resource development, as well as helping us to sustain many of our community-based operations. Investec Asset Management has demonstrated a strong commitment to investing in and uplifting communities, particularly through HIV treatment and prevention efforts.

Coca Cola and Chevron South Africa have teamed up to offer a great gift to DTHF. Through the Star Mart convenience stores, Chevron and Coca Cola donate a portion of certain packs of Coca Cola purchased throughout the year. In early 2008, James Ngubo of Chevron, Garth Watters of Peninsula Beverage Co. and other corporate representatives presented us with their first cheque in an exciting handover ceremony attended by Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
Chevron and Coca Cola have proven to be invested and inspiring teammates in all of our various efforts.

The band Freshlyground was formed in 2002 and released their first album the following year. Freshlyground have garnered several awards and nominations over the years- most notably the MTV Europe Best African Act Award in 2006. The band has released three albums, and tour extensively across Africa and Europe. Freshlyground is a household name in South Africa, and as such provides a great platform for exposure, awareness and roll out of HIV related messages and specific DTHF programs.
Freshlyground first linked hands with DTHF in 2005 when they donated proceeds from their show at Huguenot Hall. They have since hosted two more packed concerts and performed at a benefit dinner in 2008 to promote and raise funds for our cause. Additionally, they have funded the monthly salary of a Sizophila counselor for the past several years, as well as contributing album sales at concerts.
Freshlyground has a proven commitment to assisting in the fight against HIV and Aids in South Africa, and have been a fantastic public partner in all of our endeavors.

In July 2008, the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation happily welcomed the team at Volkswagen South Africa into our close circle of "Friends of the Foundation " following the highly successful "Freshlyground/Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation benefit concert presented by Volkswagen." This exclusive benefit dinner, sponsored by Volkswagen, was held at the Groote Schuur Manor House on the Presidential Estate in Cape Town. A total of 220 guests dined with the Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and were delighted by a sensational music line up. Volkswagen dedicated all of the proceeds from the evening directly to the construction of the Kethuphila "Choose Life" Youth Centre, contributing to over 10% of the overall costs. Since this successful beginning, Volkswagen South Africa has since donated additional funding through collaboration with singer-activist, Annie Lennox.
Volkswagen South Africa's commitment to HIV/AIDS efforts goes well beyond their fiscal contributions. As part of the company's key corporate strategic initiatives, Volkswagen has undertaken an HIV/Aids Workplace Programme since 2001. The programme educates employees on HIV opportunistic diseases, prevention methods as well as government-endorsed treatment and provides counselling to over 60% of its workforce.

John and Beth Dittrich, from Anchorage, Alaska, are committed to meaningful causes in both their own community and in the lives of people around the world. They have demonstrated their dedication to a healthy and bright future for youth in South Africa by supporting the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation's Youth Program.
Their generous donation has enabled DTHF to expand its outreach to young people in a variety of ways, such as supporting the Future Fighters Youth Community Advisory Board, creating learning sessions and leadership training for youth in the communities, and offering recreational and educational activities which will be run out of the future Kethuphila ‘Choose Life' Youth Centre in Masiphumelele.

We are very grateful for these dedicated friends for the support and commitment they have shown. Our newly launched and successful prevention programme, the TUTU TESTER mobile HIV testing unit, has been made possible through a joint partnership with Metropolitan and its Health Division - MHG and Qualsa Healthcare. Their provision of the vehicle and its associated costs has allowed us to be on the ground and running since May 2008 - and test over 5,000 people in the Western Cape thus far.
"As a company that believes in the power of partnerships to increase access to healthcare for all, partnering with the Foundation was just the right fit for Metropolitan" -Kusile Mthunzi-Hairwadzi, Executive: Corporate Affairs.
In addition to this major contribution, MHG and Qualsa initially began supporting our work in early 2007 by making a large donation to the HIV Education Programme. Subsequently, they donated a Smart Car for transporting research study participants, and also gifted us with a beautiful, original print of the famous photograph of Desmond Tutu, "The Hands that Shape Humanity."

Chevron South Africa contributes to a diverse range of community programs around the country and, specifically, has been a charitable contributor to our work in HIV over the years. Their initial donation of a major portion of the HIV Education Programme costs helped us to extend our holistic HIV training programme throughout South Africa.

Through the Star Mart convenience stores, Chevron and Coca Cola donate a portion of certain packs of Coca Cola purchased throughout the year.
