HVTN 503 - Phambili
This clinical trial was designed to evaluate the safety and preliminary efficacy of an experimental HIV vaccine in up to 3,000 people in South Africa, making it the largest HIV vaccine trial in Africa to date. In South Africa, the trial is known as Phambili, the Xhosa word for "moving forward."

This trial is currently on hold but in the participant follow-up period.

The vaccine trials conducted by the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation are being carried out in collaboration with the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN), the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) and the South African AIDS Vaccine Initiative (SAAVI)
