The Comprehensive International Programme for Research on AIDS (CIPRA-SA)

CIPRA - SA is a programme sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and spans five projects including:

  • Family treatment through either a doctor format or a primary health care nurse format
  • A novel approach to paediatric treatment
  • Bacterial conjugate vaccines
  • TB studies
  • Laboratory studies to identify inexpensive monitoring tests for HIV infected people.

Prof James McIntyre of The Perinatal HIV Research Unit (PHRU) at the University of the Witwatersrand, is the principle investigator of the programme which has sites in both Cape Town and Johannesburg.

The Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation hosts the Cape Town site for projects one and three at the Masiphumelele Clinic.
