Daniella Mark at Hannan Crusaid's Adolescent ARV Clinic opening

Strong adherence rates are essential in promoting long, healthy lives for adolescents on antiretroviral treatment.

For this reason, the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation launched an adolescent-specific ARV clinic in April 2008 on Hannan Crusaid's premises. Our research has shown that a warm, comfortable and friendly environment for young people is invaluable in securing attendance at our treatment clinic, and improving our clients' overall health.

Adolescents aged 9 to 20 are divided into four age groups and are scheduled to visit the clinic on corresponding Tuesday afternoons throughout the month. Visitors are invited to attend age-appropriate support groups and interact with their peers in an open and uplifting atmosphere. Counseling at the clinic is offered by well-trained and sensitive employees and includes education about their condition, encouragement during their difficult times, and hope for the future that lies ahead. We also promote positive prevention - that is preventing them from passing on HIV to their non-infected partners down the line.

DTHF recognizes that the burden of HIV rests largely with the youth - the future- of South Africa. We are committed to continually improving our services and, especially, welcoming more adults and adolescents to take control of their health.
