Headquarters at UCT Faculty of Health Sciences
We operate our activities out of the following facilities in the Western Cape:
Head Office
The Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation and Desmond Tutu HIV Centre operate jointly from the head office at the University of Cape Town's Faculty of Health Sciences in Observatory.
This location also houses the DTHC's Clinical Trials Unit, a clinic atmosphere that sees clients enrolled in antiretroviral treatment and prevention studies.
Hannan Crusaid Treatment Centre
When Hannan Crusaid Treatment Centre opened on March 3, 2004 in Gugulethu, Nyanga District, it officially became the first dedicated HIV treatment centre in the Western Cape.
The clinic is a joint venture between DTHF and the Western Cape Department of Health and was initially funded by Crusaid, a UK based NGO. Thousands of people receive life-enhancing antiretroviral treatment and support at this location.
Emavundleni Centre
This state-of-the-art centre opened its doors in April 2007 to house DTHF's first large-scale HIV vaccine trials in Crossroads, Nyanga District. Designed to accomodate hundreds of trial participants, the centre has a laboratory, a well-equipped pharmacy on site, as well as clinical, meeting, office and education space.
Today, this beautiful double-story building houses prevention activities such as voluntary counseling and testing in addition to our ongoing vaccine trials and psychosocial research.
Desmond and Leah Tutu Treatment Centre
The Desmond and Leah Tutu Treatment Centre opened in 2003 as an annex to the Masiphumelele primary health care clinic. In addition to offering antiretroviral treatment and HIV care to this community, the centre also conducts research into tuberculosis and innovative prevention methods.
The Tutu Tester - Mobile VCT Unit
As of May 2008, the Foundation introduced an eye-catching, friendly mobile HIV testing unit to greater Cape Town's streets. The vehicle offers free voluntary counseling and testing services to areas in need of strong preventative measures. Clients can also receive free screening for blood pressure and blood sugar, BMI, sexually transmitted infections and tuberculosis.
